Dietmar Osterburg - guitar, composition
Christoph König - violin
Peter Schwebs - bass
Eddie Filipp - drums
released November 4, 2019
Dietmar Osterburg's "Downstream" is his fourth album and - after three trio recordings - his first in a quartet with Peter Schwebs on bass, Eddie Filipp, drums, and Christoph König on violin/viola as the guitarist's soloistic partner.
What you get here is violin and guitar in their maturest brotherhood in spirit, as can be heard in "Abroad" as a salute to gypsy jazz as well as in compositional gems such as "Downstream" and the richly deserved König features "Around That Time", "Come to Nothing" or "Dream Steps", whereas "Open Country" is a highlight for the host whose guitar playing is admirably "pianistic". His linear playing might even bring to mind Eric Dolphy's conquest of the freer jazz heaven, while his strong chordal approach keeps enriching the narrative of modern jazz guitar playing through his very specific, very personal, and completely Osterburgian "harmonics".
"Composing", Osterburg said recently, "has always been a part of my self-conception as a musician."
